So many months have passed by with so many wonderful things to share. I just can't seem to find the time to get downstairs to add the great pictures to our blog. Everyone is doing great. School is finally out for the summer and we are trying to organize and plan a few things.

The picture was taken down by the bay. We gathered everyone, got fried chicken, ice cream and rootbeer and headed down to the water. What a welcome break it was to the busyness of the past few months. We took the time to just hang out and it felt great!!

Half Full or Half Empty

It has been many many months since I have updated our blog. Life just seemed to get in the way and I haven't taken the time to update on whats been going on. I have missed updates on birthdays and Emma's baptism, holidays, trips and just the daily fun of our busy house. Maybe someday I'll be able to catch up and look back at the fun and share it. For now I'll include this one picture from the end of 2009.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/S20gKvqqBYI/AAAAAAAAAOs/0bB_m5A16xs/s320/DSC_7540.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435035694272218498" />

When I started our blog about a year ago, my first post was about Emma and her new journey with diabetes. This picture is a year later. The milk carton is one we started at the beginning that holds her used needles...well except her 10 day honeymoon off insulin a few weeks into the journey. It became somewhat of a symbol of her courage with the needles as they filled the carton. She could look at it and appreciate that she was able to be strong and see how far she had come.

It changed to blue when she started using an insulin pump at the end of summer. What a blessing that has been. She was very excited to take the picture when there was no more room in the carton for even one more needle. For Emma...the glass is definitely half full and on it's way to overflowing! She is amazing!

Happy Birthday to my Favorite Fisherman

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/SnAX5jJ4WdI/AAAAAAAAAN4/nC560KWAJKI/s320/DSC_7792.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363813433654925778" />Happy Birthday Rick! Emma waited, and it finally came...her new purple insulin pump...she is thrilled!! Now for the rest of the wait. She doesn't actually get to use it until August 18th, the week after she's home from Diabetic Day Camp. Thanks for the message Mom!

I'm invisible.

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, "Can't you see I'm on the phone?"

Obviously not. No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible.

Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, "What time is it?" I'm a satellite guide to answer, "What number is the Disney Channel?" I'm a car to order, "Right around 5:30, please."

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again.

She's going, she's going, she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean. My unwashed hair was pulled up in a banana clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, "I brought you this."

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe . I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: "To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees."

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, "Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it."

And the workman replied, "Because God sees."

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, "I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become."

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, "My mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table." That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, "You're gonna love it there."

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Great Job, Mom!

Fun at the Ranch

The ranch brings something new each time we go. We went to the Olympic Game Farm to see and feed the animals. WOW!! Having the bison, musk ox, zebra and llamas take the bread out of your hands is a little unnerving. You just can't get it out the window fast enough sometimes! Just before the llama picture, Rick had the camera pointed out my window, and as I turned around the llama looked as if it would nibble Ricks ear soon if it didn't get bread. I must have had quite the look on my face because Rick spun around panicked that something was going to get him! We got the llama some bread, Rick snapped the picture and I moved the car ahead. But we made it out with every ones fingers intact!

Fun in the Sun

This was one of the first sunny warm days of spring. Somehow...all our traditions seem to involve FOOD! A few years back, Rick shared an idea from a family he knew for General Conference weekend...something special for our family to enjoy, saved for just those two special weekends each year. We call it WAFFLE EXTREME for breakfast! Waffles with ice cream, whip cream, homemade strawberry freezer jam, chocolate chips, syrup...and whatever else that sounds tempting. This year Nana was here and brought us a fun new pan, so we changed things up a bit.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/ShbwcraN7pI/AAAAAAAAAGw/5m8r9HQCZP4/s320/DSC_3581.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338718783773994642" />

This pan is called a waffle pancake pan...that seemed all too boring for my group...so they came up with wancakes, panfles, waffakes, and others, but we finally settled on PAFFLES.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/Shbwnb7t5iI/AAAAAAAAAG4/WRE8vb7XZSo/s320/DSC_3583.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338718968598095394" />
We love Waffle Extreme, Paffle extreme, General Conference weekend and great family traditions.

Battle of the Books

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/ShbtG4yL7DI/AAAAAAAAAGI/z4FQhqZlkGA/s200/DSC_3403.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338715110872181810" />

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/ShbvlKVnx1I/AAAAAAAAAGo/jrzunyViMiM/s320/DSC_3482.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338717830003541842" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/ShbtYJfYcFI/AAAAAAAAAGY/0xj8lT3FS94/s200/DSC_3475.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338715407414489170" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__-WlFq6X-MY/ShbtOZWakFI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/xdmthkS6l_o/s200/DSC_3405.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338715239873155154" />
Cameron competed with the SCEAM team in the middle school Battle of the Books competition and they WON! The last of the fall leaves and weeds never got picked up and the moss from the winter has grown thicker and farther. We all kicked in and worked on the yard for a couple of hours...(Emma felt like it was the whole day!) It's amazing what we can get done as a group! Afterward we took a short bike ride...because it was getting dark. All week long everyone has recognized how much better the yard looks. We have a long way to go, but it's a great start and now we can think about what yummy things we'll plant in our garden patch. Just can't wait for spring!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 style="color:#663366;">Just when you think life is about as busy as you can manage...it seems to find a way to get more busy. We had Nana come for a visit from Nevada and share our Thanksgiving weekend. With turkey and all the fixings settled into our tummies and a community concert for Cameron (violin) and Alyssa (viola) enjoyed, we shifted our thoughts to Christmas lights and thoughts of giving and enjoying the season. I was determined to get Christmas cards out earlier this year and looked forward to being more organized. What we got was most of a week in the hospital and a glimpse of how brave and strong a seven year old can be. Emma has been diagnosed with Diabetes and so we join with the rest of our family that have walked that familiar path. Lucky for us...Rick and I knew what to look for and caught it before Emma became very sick. As you can see...she is more proud of being able to drink thru a straw in her hand at the hospital. What a trooper she has been!! It is amazing to me! It still gives me a twinge sometimes to give her shot...but often she skips off afterward with a quick "Thank you" or "that was a 1" referring to a pain scale from 1 to 10. I'm sure we'll have our moments, but for now I feel blessed that she is happy and healthy as we start this new journey!!
